Why Lake Tahoe

Two seasons, one clear lake.

Tahoe works all year. Summer brings the lake, boats and trails. Winter brings snow, fire pits and a very different kind of quiet.

It is Washoe land, and the name Tahoe comes from the Washoe word for the lake. Cave Rock on the East Shore is sacred to the Washoe and closed to climbing. Teams can see Washoe baskets at the Gatekeeper’s and Marian Steinbach Indian Basket Museums in Tahoe City, and late-July retreats can line up with the Washoe Tribe’s Wa She Shu It’ Deh Native American Arts Festival at the Tallac Historic Site.

The quiet work is already here, so nothing has to be shipped in from San Francisco. Local guides lead forest bathing at Sugar Pine Point State Park, sound healers travel to lakeside homes and beaches, and Sierra Hot Springs is about an hour north for a private soak.

There are tours you can only take here: the yacht to Thunderbird Lodge, a 1930s estate on the undeveloped East Shore, Vikingsholm on Emerald Bay in summer, and docent tours of the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center, where researchers explain why the lake is so clear.

We bring teams to Tahoe when they want a retreat that feels like an adventure, and a place that asks them to slow down.

Questions

Planning a retreat in Lake Tahoe.

How far is Lake Tahoe from San Francisco?

About three and a half to four hours by car. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is roughly an hour from the North Shore.

When is the best time for a retreat in Lake Tahoe?

Summer for the lake and trails, winter for snow. Late spring and early fall are quieter and great for meetings.

What size groups fit in Lake Tahoe?

Resorts on the lake and in the mountains host everything from small leadership teams to large company retreats.

What can a team do in Lake Tahoe?

Boating, paddleboarding, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, fire-pit sessions and strategy with a lake view, plus tours unique to the lake like Thunderbird Lodge, Vikingsholm at Emerald Bay and the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center.

Are there local wellness and cultural experiences, or do facilitators come from the city?

Most are right here. Local guides lead forest bathing at Sugar Pine Point State Park, sound healers come to lakeside homes and beaches, and Sierra Hot Springs is about an hour north. For culture, the Gatekeeper’s and Marian Steinbach Indian Basket Museums in Tahoe City hold Washoe baskets, and the Washoe Tribe hosts the Wa She Shu It’ Deh Native American Arts Festival at the Tallac Historic Site each summer.

Who plans and runs the retreat?

The Renewal Office designs it around your goals using the TRO Six Pillars, then handles venue, programming, facilitators and production from the first call to the week after.
