Why Sonoma
Wine country with room to roam.
Sonoma is wine country with a little more space, and it is an easy drive for the whole Bay, from Marin and the East Bay to the Peninsula and the South Bay. Small towns, farms and family wineries give it a relaxed, grounded feel.
The calendar is part of the design. Harvest runs from late summer into fall, and by early November the last fruit is in and the valleys celebrate. The Wine Road’s Wine and Food Affair brings around 50 wineries across the Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River valleys together for a weekend of pairings, a natural close to a harvest retreat.
This is Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo land, and the Valley of the Moon has drawn seekers for a long time. Jack London built his Beauty Ranch here in Glen Ellen. Sonoma Mountain Zen Center is an 80-acre Soto Zen temple above the valley that takes group retreats, and in Freestone, Osmosis offers its cedar enzyme bath and meditation garden for groups of up to 70.
Winemaker Ross Halleck is local here. At Halleck Vineyard in Sebastopol he hosts Wine as Plant Medicine ceremonies in a converted barn, with music, guided reflection and a single glass of wine, an experience built for going inward.
The properties support this kind of retreat. The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn sits on natural thermal waters, Gaige House in Glen Ellen has a meditation alcove and Zen suites, and estates like The Madrona and Farmhouse Inn can be booked whole.
We bring teams to Sonoma when they want wine country with more nature, more stillness and room to think.

Questions
Planning a retreat in Sonoma.
How far is Sonoma from the Bay Area?
About an hour to an hour and a half by car from San Francisco, Marin and the East Bay, a little longer from the South Bay. Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport is in the middle of the county.
When is the best time for a retreat in Sonoma?
Spring and fall. Harvest runs from late summer into fall and is busy and beautiful, so plan ahead. Early November is a sweet spot, when the harvest is in and the valleys celebrate.
Can we plan a retreat around the harvest celebration?
Yes. In early November the Wine Road hosts the Wine and Food Affair, with around 50 wineries across the Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River valleys pouring wines with local dishes. We can build a harvest retreat around it, with a long-table dinner in the vineyard and a closing that marks the end of the season. Dates change each year, so we confirm them first.
What size groups fit in Sonoma?
From farmhouse buyouts for small teams to spa resorts that host large groups.
What can a team do in Sonoma?
Winery and farm visits, harvest dinners, redwood walks, Jack London’s Beauty Ranch, a cedar enzyme bath at Osmosis, zazen at Sonoma Mountain Zen Center, a wine ceremony with Ross Halleck, sound meditation and strategy sessions.
Is Sonoma good for a wellness or spiritual retreat?
Very. Sonoma Mountain Zen Center takes group retreats, Osmosis hosts groups of up to 70 for its cedar enzyme bath and meditation, the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn sits on natural thermal waters, and Ross Halleck leads Wine as Plant Medicine ceremonies at Halleck Vineyard in Sebastopol.
Who plans and runs the retreat?
The Renewal Office designs it around your goals using the TRO Six Pillars, then handles venue, programming, facilitators and production from the first call to the week after.
