Why Lutsen
Big lake, big quiet.
Lutsen sits on Minnesota's North Shore, where the Sawtooth Mountains drop to Lake Superior. The lake is so large it behaves like a sea, with cold clear water, cliffs and endless horizon.
It is a place for a team that wants distance. Phones go quiet, the Superior Hiking Trail starts outside the door and the gondola at Lutsen Mountains lifts you over the Poplar River valley.
Be honest about the calendar. Summer is cool and short, and fall color peaks on the ridges from mid-September into early October and along the lake into mid-October. Winter is long and snowy, which suits ski groups but not much else.
We bring teams to Lutsen when they want true wilderness, a reset from the noise and a landscape that makes big questions feel answerable.

Questions
Planning a retreat in Lutsen.
How far is Lutsen from Minneapolis and Duluth?
About 4.5 hours by car from Minneapolis and about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours from Duluth along Highway 61. Flying guests land at Duluth (DLH) and drive up the shore.
When is the best time for a retreat in Lutsen?
Late June to mid-October. Fall is the highlight: color peaks on the inland ridges from mid-September to early October and along the lake into mid-October. Winters are long and snowy, so we only plan December to March retreats for ski-focused groups.
What size groups fit in Lutsen?
Lutsen is best for small and mid-size groups. Most lodges here host up to about 90 to 120 people for meetings, and a cabin-and-lodge buyout fits 20 to 40.
What can a team do in Lutsen?
Ride the gondola at Lutsen Mountains, hike the Superior Hiking Trail, sea kayak on Lake Superior, visit the waterfalls at Temperance River and Cascade River state parks and taste smoked fish in Grand Marais.
Who plans and runs the retreat?
The Renewal Office designs it around your goals using the TRO Six Pillars, then handles venue, programming, facilitators and production from the first call to the week after.
